
Professor John Owusu Gyapong, Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences inaugurated a 10 member Committee to lead the process of defining the structures necessary for the establishment of a University Basic School (Kindergarten, Primary and Junior High School) at the Council Chamber, UHAS Main Campus- Ho.
Addressing the members before the inauguration, Professor Gyapong expressed the University’s appreciation to all the members for accepting to assist UHAS to establish a competitive Basic School that will serve the University Community as well as the surrounding communities.
Outlining the tasks of the Committee, he entreated members to come out with defined structures, identify needed resources, set up a full implementation strategy and schedules for the timely commencement of the University Basic School. Professor Gyapong also counselled the committee to consider other innovative ideas and quality practices outside the Ghana Education Service’s standards to ensure that UHAS Basic School offers the best basic education in the Ho Municipality and beyond.
On the construction of infrastructure, the Vice Chancellor indicated that, despite the various challenges that the University faces; Management has secured the needed funds and initiated the procurement processes for the construction of a 10 unit classroom block with offices and other auxiliary facilities. He therefore tasked the committee to come out with effective supervision and monitoring strategies to ensure that the project is executed on time. He also expressed Management’s expectation that the Basic School commences operations in September, 2019.
Professor Gyapong cautioned all members representing the various associations of the University Community to communicate thoroughly the Committee’s decisions to the members of the associations they represent. He also advised that all representatives serve as a feedback channel for both the committee as well as their respective associations.
The Membership of the Committee is as follows: Ms. Ruth X. Ayittey (Senior Architect), Mrs. Lucy B. Ofori-Ayeh (Director, Academic Affairs), Dr. Emily Boakye-Yiadom (School of Medicine), Mrs. Victoria Kanda (Proprietor, Glory Kids Care Centre), Mr. Prosper Yevu (Deputy Director, HR-Municipal Education Office), Mr. Fidelis Anumu (Institute of Health Research). Mr. Edem Deikumah is the GAUA representative whilst Mr. Joshua Gadasu represents TEWU.
Other members are Ms. Hawa Osman, Mr. Ofoe Gator Kugblenu, representatives of UTAG and FUSSAG respectively. The Committee would be chaired by Professor Theophilus C. Fleischer (Dean, School of Pharmacy) and Mr. Dauda Basintale Iddrisu will serve as Secretary to the committee.
